Women's Swimming and Diving ahead of Stanford and USC
AUSTIN, Texas -- The sixth-ranked University of Texas women's swimming and diving team used five first-place finishes - including two individual titles from senior Sarah Wanezek - to take a 95-72 lead over No. 4 Stanford and a commanding 121-46 advantage over 13th-ranked Southern California during the first of two days of dual-meet competition at Lee and Jamail Texas Swim Center on Friday, Oct. 29, while the No. 8 USC men's squad hold a 109.5-57.5 advantage over the fifth-ranked Texas men. Of note, the Texas women's squad is taking on both the Cardinal and the Trojans, while the men's team is only facing USC this weekend. Wanezek, who also captured individual titles in the 100-yard freestyle as well as the 100-yard butterfly each in NCAA provisional times, teamed with junior Kristy Siminski (Portage, Ind.), sophomore Connie Brown (Andover, Mass.) and freshman Hayley McGregory (Houston, Texas) to start the afternoon strong for Texas earning a first-place finish in the 200-yard free relay. The squad finished the race with a time of 1:33.98. McGregory would go on to capture the Longhorns' third individual title with a time of 1:58.41 in the 200-yard backstroke, and lead Texas to its fifth and final title of the day, swimming the lead-off backstroke leg of its winning 400-yard medley relay squad comprised of McGregory, sophomore Elizabeth Tinnon (Bowling Green, Ky.), Wanezek and Siminski. The team's winning time of 3:42.62 in the 400-yard medley relay and McGregory's mark of 1:58.41 in the 200-yard backstroke were both NCAA provisional standards. "I am pleased with the score, but overall I am pleased with how the swimmers competed," said Texas co-head coach Jill Sterkel. "The things the girls have been doing in training is beginning to show up in the meets, and, from a coaches' standpoint, that is very rewarding." On the men's side, Texas senior Daniel DiToro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was the top performer for the Longhorns on the day, posting a winning and an NCAA provisional time of 48.25 in the 100-yard butterfly. Southern California opened the meet with five-straight wins and finished the day with swimming titles in seven of eight events. Sophomores Viktor Bodrogi and Larsen Jenson and junior Ous Melloui led the Trojan charge with each capturing as least one individual and one relay win. Meanwhile, on the diving front, Cardinal sophomore Cassidy Krug finished first and senior Ashlee Rosenthal took second, with scores of 471.50 and 438.00, respectively, in the women's three-meter competition. Texas sophomore Ali Bunting (Grafton, Wis..) rounded out the top three, finishing with a mark of 429.35. Southern California sophomore Michael Hilde, senior Ray Vincent and sophomore Kenny Jenkins grabbed the top three spots in the men's three-meter dive, with Texas sophomore Matt Bisordi (San Mateo, Calif.) and freshman Brian Smith (Carrollton, Texas) taking fourth and fifth, respectively. The Texas women will resume dual-meet competition against Stanford and USC at 10 a.m. (CST) on Saturday, Oct. 30, while the men will do the same against USC in order to complete to complete the two-day dual meet.
