Oct. 3, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Swimming announced Wednesday the selections of Texas senior Laura Sogar and former Longhorn Kathleen Hersey to the U.S. roster for the 2012 FINA Short Course World Championships set for Dec. 12-16 in Istanbul, Turkey. This will mark Sogar's first opportunity to represent the U.S. at a senior level international meet. Sogar (Exeter, R.I.) will compete for the United States in the 200m breaststroke at the FINA Short Course Worlds. The six-time All-American placed fourth in the event at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. Sogar also was a finalist in the event at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials prior to her senior year of high school. Sogar most recently represented the U.S. on the international stage at the 2008 FINA World Youth Championships, where she won silver in the 50m breaststroke and bronze in the 200m breaststroke. Hersey will head to Istanbul after competing in a second consecutive Olympic Games for the United States. The Roswell, Ga., native will compete in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly events at the FINA Short Course Worlds. Hersey placed fourth in the 200m butterfly at the London Olympics after taking eighth in the event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The FINA Short Course World Championships, which feature races conducted in a 25-meter pool, are contested every two years. The U.S. roster for the event was selected by way of performances produced at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, the London Olympics and the 2012 U.S. Open. ## UT ##
