Texas ex Hansen sets new American record in 100-meter breaststroke at U.S. Olympic Team Trials
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Former Longhorn Brendan Hansen established a new American record in the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:00.13 during the semifinal heat of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Wednesday night at the Long Beach Swim Center. Hansen, who shaved .08 off the record set by Ed Moses on April 4, 2003, will race in the 100-meter breaststroke finals Thursday night. Hansen will earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team with a first or second-place finish in the finals. Fellow Texas ex Tanica Jamison qualified for today's final in the 100-meter butterfly along with veteran Olympians Jenny Thompson and Misty Hyman. Rising junior Christian Schurr (Austin, Texas/Stephen F. Austin) just missed making the final of the 100-meter breaststroke, finishing 10th in the semifinals with a time of 1:03.45.
