Bispo named to Capital One Academic All-America Team

June 9, 2011

AUSTIN, Texas – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday the selection of University of Texas junior swimmer Karlee Bispo to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Women’s At-Large Team.

One of only nine NCAA Division I women’s swimmers or divers selected to the team, Bispo earned a third-team selection in the at-large division, which includes eligible student-athletes in the sports of swimming and diving, bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, tennis and water polo.  Bispo becomes the 11th University of Texas women’s swimmer to earn the title of Academic All-American and is the first since Katie Robinson in 2007.  Bispo was the only Big 12 Conference women’s swimmer selected to the team.

Bispo (Modesto, Calif.), a chemistry major, is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection.  She earned seven All-America honors at the 2011 NCAA Championships contested at her home pool, UT’s Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.  The 2011 Big 12 Conference Women's Swimmer of the Year won all seven of her individual and relay events to help Texas win the team title at the 2011 Big 12 Championships.  She was the recipient of the Jill A. Sterkel Leadership Award at UT’s women’s athletics awards banquet in April.

Bispo earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-America national ballot last month when she was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District Team.  To be nominated for the Capital One Academic All-District Team, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve on their respective teams with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. Student-athletes must reach sophomore athletic and academic standings at their current institution to be eligible.
