WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Texas got off to a fast start in the morning preliminary swim on the first day of competition on Thursday at the 2005 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center on the campus of Purdue University.
Texas began the prelim swims strong and concluded in similar fashion as the Longhorns 200-yard freestyle relay team of senior Sarah Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.), sophomore Connie Brown (Andover, Mass.), junior Kristy Siminski (Portage, Ind.) and senior Kaela Humphries (Chaska, Minn.), posted the fifth-fastest time of 1 minute, 30.54 seconds and their 400-yard medley relay team of freshman Hayley McGregory (Houston, Texas), Elizabeth Tinnon (Bowling Green, Ky.), Wanezek and Siminski qualified fifth with a mark of 3:37.97. Texas' 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay entered the meet ranked fifth in the country and both have qualified for the "A" final to be held later tonight.
Individually in the morning preliminary swim, Wanezek led all Texas swimmers on Thursday by qualifying fourth for tonight's "A" final of the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.36. Junior Elizabeth Wycliffe (Kingston, Ontario) narrowly missed a qualifying spot in the top 16 of the 200-yard individual medley, finishing tied with Georgia's Melissa Klein for 18th place with a time of 2:00.98.
