Women's Swimming sends seven to day two finals at Big 12 Championships

AUSTIN, Texas -- Seven Longhorns earned seven finals berths during the day two preliminary-round session of the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Sophomore Susana Escobar was one of three Longhorns to reach the 500-yard freestyle final after taking second in the preliminaries in 4:46.85. Freshman Natalie Sacco added a personal-best mark of 4:48.15 to take fifth in the prelims, and sophomore Traci Van Matre reached the finals with an eighth-place morning swim of 4:48.56. All three swimmers earned NCAA provisional-qualifying marks.

Texas added two more finals participants in the 200 IM with junior Alison Soelter and sophomore Alex Basso earning qualifying times. Soelter took third in 2:01.38 while Basso placed seventh in 2:02.98.

The Longhorns cemented two more finals berths in the 50 freestyle, as junior Hee-Jin Chang clocked a personal-best mark of 22.51 for second place, and freshman Brie Powers took seventh in 23.12.

The women's one-meter diving preliminaries get underway at 1 p.m. Central. Thursday's finals begin at 6 p.m.
