Women's Swimming and Diving lands eight on Academic All-Big 12 Team
IRVING, Texas -- The University of Texas women's swimming and diving team landed eight student-athletes on the 2008 Academic All-Big 12 Team, the league announced Tuesday. Among the Longhorns' selections was junior diver Kathryn Kelly, who earned a 4.0 GPA in public relations in each of the past two semesters. Joining Kelly on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team was sophomore Alex Basso, junior Hee-Jin Chang, senior Macie Garrett, senior Delia Huang, junior Rebecca Orr, senior Lindsay Voyles and senior diver Mary Yarrison. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the Academic All-Big 12 women's swimming and diving team had 61 first-team recipients and 15 student-athletes on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team features student-athletes maintaining a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or during the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. Texas begins competition in the 2008 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin.
