SOGAR WINS SILVER AND BRONZE AT FINA SHORT COURSE WORLDS
Texas senior Laura Sogar won the silver medal in the 200m breaststroke for the United States at the FINA Short Course World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey (Dec. 16). She added a bronze medal after competing in the preliminary round of the 400m medley relay.
Sogar finished off a productive two-week period that saw her threaten the American record in the 200-yard breaststroke at the AT&T Winter National Championships. Sogar finished about half of a second off of the American record in that event, but she managed to obliterate her school marks in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke events. Sogar ranks second nationally in the 100 breaststroke (58.32) and the 200 breaststroke (2:05.04).

JAQUES, TAYLOR EARN BIG 12 WEEKLY HONORS
The Big 12 Conference announced Wednesday (Jan. 23) the selections of UT sophomore swimmer Gretchen Jaques as the league’s Women’s Swimmer of the Week and junior diver Maren Taylor as the league’s Women’s Diver of the Week.
Jaques registered strong performances in UT’s recent meet at Auburn (Jan. 10), where she defeated U.S. Olympian Micah Lawrence in the 100-yard breaststroke and finished just behind teammate Laura Sogar, UT’s record holder in the event.
The Californian also helped the Horns win the 200 freestyle relay with a 22.44 relay split. Jaques added a victory in the 100 freestyle at Georgia, where she defeated UGA All-American Megan Romano by one one-hundredth of a second. It marked Jaques’ first career Big 12 weekly honor.
Taylor continued her solid redshirt junior season with victories in the one-meter and three-meter events at Auburn and a one-meter victory at Georgia. The Arlington, Va., native picked up her sixth career Big 12 weekly award and her third this season.
Taylor is in the midst of a successful return to diving after taking a medical redshirt last season. Taylor suffered a dislocated elbow while competing as a sophomore at the 2011 NCAA Championship in Austin.
DENNINGHOFF MAKING IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Arizona transfer Sarah Denninghoff made an impact upon her arrival on the Forty Acres last fall. The nine-time All-American leads an impressive group of backstroke swimmers, and abilities as a freestyler add depth to UT’s relays.
Denninghoff ranks seventh nationally in the 100 backstroke and ninth in the 200 freestyle. Her top time of 1:55.26 in the 200 backstroke ranks her 24th nationally in the event.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERSWith a deep, talented roster featuring nationally-ranked performers in every stroke, it’s no surprise that Texas has top-10 national rankings in all five relays, including three among the top five nationally.
No school has won more NCAA 200 freestyle relay titles than Texas (nine), and UT’s fourth-ranked quartet of
Ellen Lobb,
Kelsey Amundsen,
Gretchen Jaques and
Bethany Adams are looking to add to the Longhorns’ title haul. UT posted its fourth-ranked mark of 1:29.14 at the AT&T Winter Nationals in November.
Texas posted the nation’s fifth-fastest time in the 400 freestyle relay in December when
Alex Hooper,
Sarah Denninghoff, Jaques and Amundsen finished in 3:16.05. UT also boasts the No. 5 national mark in the 400 medley relay. Denninghoff,
Laura Sogar, Jaques and Amundsen clocked 3:33.50 at the AT&T Winter Nationals.
Texas ranks seventh nationally in the 800 freestyle relay (7:07.87) and the 200 medley relay (1:38.47).
DYNAMIC DIVERSTexas’ traditionally strong diving corps has held true to form this season. The group has been bolstered by the return of redshirt junior All-American
Maren Taylor, who took a medical redshirt last season after injuring her right elbow at the 2011 NCAA Championships, where she earned All-America honors on all three boards.
Taylor swept the one-meter and three-meter events at Auburn and captured the one-meter event in UT’s recent meet at Georgia, where she also took second in the three-meter event. Taylor is joined by fellow All-Americans
Shelby Cullinan and
Diana Wilcox. Senior
Samantha Holland and freshmen
Meghan Houston and
Kristina Hoffmann add depth to a potent Texas diving line-up. Houston won a pair of U.S. national titles last August just prior to enrolling at UT.
THE 2012-13 LONGHORNS: Under first-year head coach Carol Capitani (cap-it-TAN-ee), first-year assistant coach Roric Fink and 19th year diving coach Matt Scoggin, Texas returns 11 All-Americans from the 2011-12 team that took second at the Big 12 Championships and placed ninth at the NCAA Championships.
Senior Laura Sogar returns as a six-time All-American after reaching the finals of the 200-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Five of Sogar’s classmates – swimmers Bethany Adams, Kelsey Amundsen, Jessica Guro and divers Shelby Cullinan and Diana Wilcox – also return as All-Americans. UT also features returning All-America juniors Ellen Lobb, Lily Moldenhauer, Samantha Tucker and Maren Taylor in addition to sophomore All-American Kelsey LeNeave.
