Into the Blue with Sarah Wanezek: January 25
Sarah Wanezek has been the Big 12's Swimmer of the Year the last two seasons and will provide fans with insight into Longhorns' swimming and diving through her diary, "Into the Blue." Wanezek is an 11-time NCAA All-American and holds UT records in the 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke and 400-yard medley relay. Throughout the season, Sarah will check-in periodically with TexasSports.com as the Longhorns make their run at a seventh-straight Big 12 Conference Championship and prepare for the 2005 NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. Dear Longhorn Fans, Last weekend our team had the opportunity to swim against Rice University and the #1 ranked Georgia Bulldogs. After a long and very challenging few weeks of Christmas training we were able to take home a win in Houston and put up a great fight for a close second against Georgia. The team had fun in Houston arriving early to play a few games and get in a long, but much needed, team warm up. Rice gave us a run near the end of the meet but we were able to finish very strong with a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 IM and a win in the 200 free relay. Waking up and flying all the way to Atlanta the very next morning was not an easy task for us after a three-hour bus ride home from Houston the night before. But once in Athens we were able to relax for the evening and get ready to compete the next afternoon. We definitely did not let Georgia win without putting up a fight. Taking home several first and second place finishes, and even more very close races for third through eighth, we made it a very exciting meet for all the fans that were able to come out and watch us. The Bulldogs were able to beat us by about 30 points, but we left feeling very confident for our meet this weekend against third ranked Arizona, conference and NCAAs in March. We hope to see all of you at the swim center Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at noon to support us against the Wildcats. We'd love to hear your cheers! ~Sarah
