Escobar, Kelly recognized by Big 12 Conference
IRVING, Texas -- Texas sophomore swimmer Susana Escobar and junior diver Kathryn Kelly have been selected as the Big 12 Conference's Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week after turning in outstanding performances in recent meets against Auburn, Georgia and Arizona. Escobar (Queretaro, Mexico) registered three victories on Jan. 19 at No. 5 Arizona, taking the 1000 freestyle (9:57.21), the 500 freestyle (4:53.94) and the 400 individual medley (4:25.90). Escobar tallied NCAA provisional-qualifying marks in the 400 IM (4:19.49) and the 500 freestyle (4:47.26) against No. 1 Auburn on Jan. 10 and added a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark in the 1,650 freestyle (16:29.87) against No. 2 Georgia on Jan. 11. A first-time selection as the Big 12 Women's Swimmer of the Week, Escobar holds the league's top marks in the 1000- and 1,650-freestyle events. Kelly (Longwood, Fla.) earned her second career selection as the Big 12's Women's Diver of the Week after sweeping the one- and three-meter events against Auburn (299.40/340.50) and Georgia (318.23/339.15). Kelly also took second in the one-meter event at Arizona (302.10), where she was edged by teammate Mary Yarrison. Kelly's honor is her first since her freshman season, when she was named the Big 12 Women's Diver of the Week in October of 2005. Texas sweeps the Big 12 Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards for a second consecutive time after swimmer Hee-Jin Chang and diver Mary Yarrison received the same honors on Dec. 12, 2007. Texas returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 2 when it meets Texas A&M in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown in Austin. The Longhorns will honor seniors Macie Garrett, Delia Huang, Lindsay Voyles and Yarrison before the meet, which is slated for a 1 p.m. Central start.
