HERSEY, GINGRICH EARN NATIONAL ACCOLADES
CollegeSwimming.com selected UT sophomore Kathleen Hersey and as its NCAA Division I Women’s Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 3 before bestowing the same honor upon UT sophomore Leah Gingrich on Nov. 10.

Hersey captured the 200-yard IM (1:59.79), the 400 IM (4:14.40), the 100 butterfly (53.97) and the 200 butterfly (1:56.98) while posting NCAA “B” cuts in each of those events in UT’s wins over Indiana and Michigan.  Hersey helped UT to victory in all five relays and helped register NCAA “B” cuts in three of the relays.  It marked Hersey’s fourth career selection as the NCAA Division I Women’s Swimmer of the Week.

Gingrich swept her three individual events while helping the Longhorns to a win over Texas A&M.  Gingrich opened the meet with a win in the 1000-yard freestyle in 9 minutes, 49.06 seconds.  Gingrich notched her second victory of the meet in the 200 butterfly, where she was victorious in a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 1:58.08.  She later added a win in the 500 freestyle at 4:48.19, good for another NCAA “B” cut, before anchoring UT’s first-place 400 freestyle relay in 50.64.  It marked Gingrich’s first career selection as the NCAA Division I Women’s Swimmer of the Week.

Freshman diver Maren Taylor won two of three events at the Texas Swimming & Diving Hall of Fame Invitational and was selected as the Big 12 Conference Women’s Diver of the Week on Dec. 16.

THE 2009-10 LONGHORNS
Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Kim Brackin, Texas returns 18 letter winners – including 10 All-Americans - from the 2009 squad that took fifth place at the NCAA Championships and captured the Big 12 team title.  Hersey, the 2009 Big 12 Swimmer and Newcomer of the Year, returns after posting three top-three individual finishes and swimming on four All-America relays at the NCAA Championships.  Hersey was a semifinalist in the 200m butterfly at the 2009 FINA World Championships and a finalist in that event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Sophomore Karlee Bispo tallied two top-five individual finishes last season at the NCAA Championships and also swam on four All-America relays.  Sophomore Katie Riefenstahl earned All-America honors in the 200 backstroke and was a member of four All-America relays.  Sophomore Leah Gingrich added an All-America finish in the 200 butterfly, and junior Brie Powers scored her first All-America honor after helping UT to a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay at the NCAA Championships.

Senior Alexi Spann and junior Carlye Ellis added honorable mention All-America showings after competing on the medley relays at the NCAA Championships, and Spann also earned individual All-America honors in 2007.  Junior Natalie Sacco and senior Susana Escobar registered honorable mention All-America finishes in the 1,650 freestyle a season ago.  Texas also boasts a class of freshmen ranked as the second-best in the nation by CollegeSwimming.com.
