Softball releases 2013 schedule
Nov. 28, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas -- After making its third NCAA Tournament super regional appearance in program history last spring, the Texas Softball program has put together another challenging schedule for its 17th season of varsity competition. Head coach Connie Clark's squad, going for its fifth Big 12 regular-season title, will face 13 teams that competed in the 2012 NCAA postseason event, including two of the eight Women's College World Series participants.
UT will host 29 games at Red & Charline McCombs Field, including a pair of tournaments in the Texas Classic and the Texas Invitational, presented by Time Warner Cable. The Longhorns will also travel to three tournaments, going to Houston, Kissimmee, Fla., and Fullerton, Calif.
In all, Texas will square off against 10 squads that ended 2012 ranked or receiving votes in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association final poll and four that finished in the top 15. The Longhorns are also slated to play 36 of their 55 regular-season games versus teams that finished the 2012 season with a winning record.
Texas opens the 2013 campaign Feb. 7 by hosting the first game of the Texas Classic against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. In addition to the Islanders, the Longhorns welcome Memphis and North Texas to Austin for the four-day tournament.
After a Feb. 13 home game against Stephen F. Austin, UT heads to Houston for the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational from Feb. 15-17 and will face DePaul, Illinois and the host Cougars. UT then hosts Houston Baptist Feb. 20 and the Texas Invitational, presented by Time Warner Cable Feb. 22-24, which includes contests against Lamar, Tulsa and Utah State.
UT continues nonconference tournament action the following weekend with a trip to Kissimmee, Fla., for the Citrus Classic, featuring games against Louisville, Hofstra, Louisiana-Lafayette, Syracuse and Fordham. The Longhorns return to Austin March 6 for a doubleheader against Louisiana-Lafayette. Texas then plays a split three-game series with Texas State March 8-10. UT hosts the March 8 and 10 contests while making a trip to Bobcat Softball Stadium on March 9.
The Longhorns travel to California March 14-16 for the Judi Garman Classic at Cal State Fullerton. UT opens the event with Arizona State on March 14. On March 15, Texas faces Penn State and Washington before ending the event March 16 with contests against N.C. State and DePaul.
UT continues the road trek, and opens Big 12 Conference play, with a stop at Baylor March 23 before hosting the Bears March 24. The Longhorns make March's final road trip the 28-30 with a three-game series at Kansas.
After just five home games in March, Texas hosts 11-straight contests to begin April. McNeese State will be in Austin for a doubleheader April 2 and Texas Southern stops in for a game April 4. The Longhorns host Western Kentucky April 6-7 before welcoming Big 12 foes Iowa State (April 12-14) and Oklahoma (April 19-21) for three-game series.
Texas finishes April with three road games at Texas Tech (April 26-28) and begins May with a trio of contests at Oklahoma State (May 3-5). UT wraps up the regular season May 12 with a home contest against Baylor.
A year ago, the Longhorns posted a 47-13 record and 16-8 Big 12 mark. UT returns seven position starters, three pitchers and 10 total letterwinners from the club that produced an eighth-straight NCAA Tournament bid.
