Future Longhorn Holly Kern named Dallas-area Player of the Year
June 14, 2012
Texas Softball incoming pitcher/first baseman Holly Kern (Plano East HS) was named today as Dallas-area Softball Player of the Year by the Dallas Morning News. Kern, who will be a freshman for the Longhorns next season, led all area pitchers as a senior by going 33-4 in the circle. At the plate, Kern hit .365 while belting 10 home runs and 47 RBI and led Plano East to the Class 5A state semifinals for the second time in her career. Kern was named earlier as District 8-5A most valuable player. Three of Kern's wins came against nationally ranked Plano while beating Hebron three times. Kern defeated Hebron twice to beat Heather Sterns, the Gatorade Texas Softball Player of the Year. In the win over Hebron in the 5A Region I final, Kern came within four outs of a no-hitter and hit a three-run home run in the game. She will join a Texas squad that finished the 2012 season with a No. 9 national ranking and 47-13 overall record while reaching the NCAA Super Regional.
