Six Longhorns earn 2012 All-Big 12 Conference honors

AUSTIN, Texas - Six Texas Softball players earned 2012 All-Big 12 Conference honors as announced by the league office today. Five Longhorns (Lexy Bennett, Courtney Craig, Taylor Hoagland, Torie Schmidt and Nadia Taylor) earned All-Big 12 first team honors while pitcher Blaire Luna received All-Big 12 second team honors. The five players earning first team conference honors are the most ever recorded in Texas history with four first team honors being the previous best (1998, 1999, 2009, 2010 and 2011). Bennett is batting .393 with 10 home runs, 52 RBI and 10 stolen bases and now a four-time All-Big 12 selection, earning her third conference first team honor (2009 and 2010). Craig is batting .345 with six home runs and 39 RBI. She earned her third conference honor and was named first team for the second time in her career (2009). Hoagland is now a three-time All-Big 12 first team selection, batting .331 this year with 16 home runs, 37 RBI and 17 stolen bases. Schmidt earns her first conference honor, batting .382 for the Longhorns with 24 RBI and 14 stolen bases. Taylor is now a four-time All-Big 12 selection, earning her second first team recognition while batting .352 this year with seven home runs, 35 RBI and two stolen bases. Luna is a three-time All-Big 12 selection and is 18-4 this season with a 2.37 ERA and three saves. In 150 2/3 innings, she has allowed 106 hits with 51 earned runs, 82 walks and 219 strikeouts with opponents batting .195 against her.
All-Big 12 and postseason honors are selected in a vote by the league's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players. Texas is ranked eighth nationally after posting a 42-10 record during the regular season, tying with Texas A&M for third place in conference play with a 16-8 mark.
