Softball lands five on Academic All-Big 12 team

IRVING, Texas - The University of Texas Softball team placed five players on the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Softball First and Second Teams, the league office announced Thursday. Junior first baseman Lexy Bennett, senior first baseman Shelby Savony and junior third baseman Nadia Taylor earned places on the first team, while sophomore pitcher Blaire Luna and sophomore leftfielder Torie Schmidt garnered second-team honors. Bennett and Savony's honors were their second consecutive first-team selections. Texas' five players are among 61 student-athletes from the league's 10 softball teams on the Academic All-Big 12 Softball Team. The Longhorns landed at least four players on the team for the fourth-straight season. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the softball academic all-league team consisted of 47 first team members combined with 14 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Texas returns to action on Sunday, May 15 when it plays host to No. 17 Baylor. First pitch is slated for Noon Central. |
