Softball lands two players on CoSIDA Academic All-District team

AUSTIN, Texas -- The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) have named Texas junior catcher Kacie Gaskin and sophomore outfielder Brittany Chalk to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 squad. The honor is the first career all-district honor for Gaskin and Chalk.

Gaskin, the Longhorns field general behind the plate carries a 3.27 cumulative GPA in psychology and has appeared in all 49 of the Texas' games this season. She ranks third on the UT team with a .297 batting average, nine stolen bases and 43 hits.

The junior backstop's 29 runs scored rank second on the team, but it is her defense that stands out, as she has made just one error in 328 chances this year. Gaskin's .997 fielding percentage is the best on the team and currently ranks in the top 10 of Texas' single-season record books. The award is her second career academic honor after garnering Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honors in 2007.

Chalk, a clutch hitter and key contributor in the outfield for the Longhorns, carries a 3.34 cumulative GPA in liberal arts. She has started 28 games this season and has seen playing time in 37 contests. The sophomore is currently tied for third on the Texas team with three home runs.

Gaskin, Chalk and their Texas teammates return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10 when they take on fifth-seeded Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Conference Championship in Oklahoma City, Okla.
