May 21, 2011
AUSTIN, Texas - Junior second baseman Paige Cormier went 3-for-4 and added a career-high six RBI to lead the University of Louisiana-Lafayette softball team to an 11-2 run-rule victory in five innings against Texas State in an elimination game of the NCAA Austin Regional on Saturday afternoon at Red and Charline McCombs Field. With the win, Louisiana-Lafayette (50-10) advances to a second elimination game tonight at 6:05 p.m. Central against host Texas. The Longhorns dropped a 1-0 decision to Houston earlier Saturday afternoon in a winner's bracket contest. Texas State concluded its season with an overall record of 33-25. Junior Ashley Brignac (31-6) picked up the win in the circle for the Ragin' Cajuns, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings and allowing three hits while striking out four. Brignac relieved Hamilton in the second inning, after Hamilton was forced to leave the game with a right leg injury. Sophomore Anne Marie Taylor (17-7) took the loss for the Bobcats, working 3.1 innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out two and walking four. Texas State grabbed the lead with a pair of runs in the second. McKenzie Baack led off the frame with a walk. After a failed sac bunt attempt, the Bobcats used back-to-back singles by Anna Hernandez and Allyce Rother to load the bases. Jordan Masek then singled sharply back to the circle to bring home Baack for the game's first run. Hamilton was injured while trying to make a play on Masek's hit, and Brignac came in on relief. With two outs, pinch-hitter Allison Snow laced a single to right field to score Hernandez and give the Bobcats a two-run advantage.
Louisiana-Lafayette immediately answered with three runs in the top of the third. Nerissa Myers led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk by Christi Orgeron. With one out, Sarah Draheim doubled to center to score Myers. Paige Cormier followed with a two-run single to center that brought home Orgeron and Draheim and chased Taylor from the circle in favor of Crystal Alaniz.
The Ragin' Cajuns blew the game open in the fourth with six runs, all coming off Alaniz. Louisiana-Lafayette loaded the bases with no outs courtesy of a walk by Natalie Fernandez and back-to-back bunt singles from Katie Smith and Myers. Orgeron produced an RBI infield single that scored Fernandez, and Sarah Bridges added a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Smith. After Draheim drew a walk to load the bases, Cormier laced a three-run double down the left field line to increase the lead to 8-2. After Taylor replaced Alaniz in the circle, Fernandez added an RBI single to bring home Cormier. Louisiana-Lafayette closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the fifth. Smith led off the frame with an infield single and advanced to third when Myers reached on an error by first baseman Haley Lemons. Orgeron followed with an RBI groundout that brought home Smith. After Chandler Hall replaced Taylor in the circle, Cormier lined a two-out RBI single to right that scored Myers with the final run.
