Texas Defeats Texas State 2-0 in Game Two at NCAA Austin Regional

May 20, 2011

AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Blaire Luna fired a one-hit shutout to lead The University of Texas softball team to a 2-0 victory against Texas State in the opening game of the NCAA Austin Regional on Friday night at Red and Charline McCombs Field.

With Friday's win, No. 3 national seed Texas (46-8) advances to Saturday's winner's bracket game at 1 p.m. Central against Houston. Texas State (33-24) will play in an elimination game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Central against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Luna (28-6) recorded her 16th complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit while striking out seven and walking one. Sophomore Anne Marie Taylor (17-6) took the loss for the Bobcats, working 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four and walking one.

Texas grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning, when Amy Hooks led off the frame with a towering shot over the left field wall for her 13th homer of the year. The game was delayed by lightning in the top of the fifth for one hour and 37 minutes before resuming at 9:38 pm Central.

Luna worked out of her only jam of the evening in the fifth. With one out and runners on the corners, she recorded back-to-back strikeouts of Allyce Rother and pinch-hitter Allison Snow to retire the side.

The Longhorns added an insurance run in the sixth. Taylor Thom led off the inning with a triple to the wall in right center. With one out, Thom came home on a sacrifice fly by Courtney Craig to close out the scoring.

Texas State threatened again in the seventh. McKenzie Baack drew a one-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate. Jenna Emery then hit a sharp liner that was snagged by third baseman Nadia Taylor, and Taylor promptly doubled off pinch-runner Coralee Ramirez at first to conclude the game.
