No. 15 Soccer to face Washington State in first round of 2008 NCAA Championship

AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 15 Texas Longhorns will face Washington State in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship. The teams will meet for the second time in program history at 5 p.m. Pacific on Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 at Clive Charles Soccer Complex on the campus of the University of Portland. UT is 1-0-0 against WSU in the all-time series. Texas (12-3-4) defeated the Cougars, 2-0, in Austin, Sept. 26, 2003. Both Texas and Washington State (10-5-5) received at-large bids to the 64-team field. The first-round winner faces the winner of the Portland and Northern Arizona match. Texas earned its first at-large berth since the 2005 season after earning automatic bids the following two years. The Longhorns are making their eighth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. UT is 5-7-1 since its first tournament match on Nov. 16, 2001 (a 2-1 loss to SMU in College Station). Texas has advanced to the Round of 16 in each of the last two seasons and also made it to the third round in 2004. In 2007, Texas played its first two rounds in College Station. The Longhorns advanced past BYU, 2-1, to earn a repeat of the 2007 Big 12 Championship title match facing Texas A&M. UT beat the Aggies, 3-2, for its first win in College Station in program history. In the third round, the Longhorns were shipped to Tallahassee to face Florida State. The Seminoles prevailed, winning 4-0, and went on to be the runner-up in the NCAA Championship. Other Big 12 teams to make the field are Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M. The 2008 NCAA College Cup will be held at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina on December 5-7.
