Shimmick, Gilbert named to Big 12 All-Tournament Team

Nov. 4, 2012

SAN ANTONIO - Following the conclusion of the Big 12 Championship, The University of Texas had two players named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team. Freshman forward Kelsey Shimmick and sophomore defender Brooke Gilbert both received the honor. Shimmick was making her league tournament debut while the selection was the first of Gilbert's career.

During the quarterfinal match against Oklahoma on Wednesday morning, Shimmick became the fourth Texas player to score two or more goals during a league tournament match. The Grapevine, Texas, product found the back of the net at 27:02 and 80:09.

She joined Kelly Wilson (2004/Nebraska), Lauren Field (2002/Iowa State) and Kelly McDonald (2002/Iowa State and 2001/Iowa State) on the list of Longhorns with multiple goals in a Big 12 Championship contest. McDonald, in 2001, was the only UT freshman to previously accomplish the feat. Shimmick ended the tournament with 96 minutes of action against TCU in the semifinal match.

Making her first appearance on the Big 12 All-Tournament Team was Gilbert. The Snohomish, Wash., native played all 90 minutes versus the Sooners in the opener and recorded two shots. She fired a shot on goal at 12:24, when Oklahoma goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire made the save, and recorded her second attempt at 44:15. Gilbert ended the tournament with one shot, at 5:18, in 52 minutes against TCU.
