Three Longhorns earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI honors

AUSTIN, Texas -- Two days following their selection to the first squad of the 2005 Academic All-Big 12 Soccer Team, University of Texas women's soccer players Julie Gailey, Karen Haight and Amy Burlingham were tabbed ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI performers as voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors Society of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday, Nov. 3.

While the honor marks the first of their respective careers for both Gailey (San Ramon, Calif.) and Haight (Beaverton, Ore.), it is the second straight year that Burlingham (Costa Mesa, Calif.) has received such recognition. Additionally, with Longhorns accounting for three of the five Big 12 players included on the first and second teams of the All-District VI squad, the three UT student-athletes earning such accolades equals a school best set one year ago when Burlingham and teammates Kelly Wilson and Dana Hall each garnered first-team honors. Of note, Gailey earned first team honors to be eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America accolades, which will be announced on Nov. 22, while Haight and Burlingham were both named to the second team.

In order to qualify for Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must at least be a sophomore at his or her particular institution, be a starter or key reserve for his or her team and hold a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or greater. Notably, District VI includes the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
