Five Longhorns pick up All-Big 12 Soccer honors

Nov. 1, 2010

AUSTIN, Texas -- Five Longhorns were named to the All-Big 12 soccer teams, the league announced on Monday. Texas place three on the Second Team and had two newcomers named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. It was Texas' most selections since 2006.

Landing on the Second Team were sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Gaul, senior defender Erica Campanelli and junior midfielder Kylie Doniak. Freshman defender Nina Frausing Pedersen and freshman midfielder Lexi Harris were two of the league's top 11 newcomers this season.

Gaul led the league during Big 12 play in goals against average (0.65), save percentage (.868) and tied for first in goals allowed (seven) and shutouts (five). The sophomore, who is one of 45 players nationally to be named to the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Watch List, also set the Texas sophomore single-season shutout record with her eight shutouts this season. Gaul was named Big 12 Defender of the Week three times this year, the most weekly accolades during one season in UT history.

Campanelli, who was a preseason All-Big 12 selection this year, helped the Texas defense post eight shutouts and kept Big 12 opponents to just seven goals over 10 matches. The senior has started on the UT backline in every match since she arrived in 2007 and her 86 starts rank fourth all-time at Texas.

Junior midfielder Doniak currently leads the team in points (21), goals (six) and assists (nine). Her nine assists are tied for the sixth most in UT single-season history. She is currently on a six-match streak of posting either a goal or an assist and has scored Texas' lone goal in its last three matches.

Newcomers Frausing and Harris have helped the Texas backline post eight shutouts and limit opponents to just seven goals during Big 12 play. Frausing has started in 12 of 13 matches played and posted one assist. Harris has started in 16 of 19 matches and posted 14 shots, eight on goal. The two selections to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Year mark the second-straight year Texas has placed two newcomers on the squad.

Texas opens Big 12 Championship play on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. Central when it faces Oklahoma at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio.
