Soccer's Abby Smith and Brooke Gilbert earn national recognition

Soccer America Team of the Week | CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performers AUSTIN, Texas - After posting a 1-0 victory over No. 22 Oklahoma State on Oct. 5, Texas Soccer freshman goalkeeper Abby Smith and sophomore center back Brooke Gilbert have earned national recognition for helping the Longhorns to the victory. Smith was tabbed as the Soccer America goalkeeper of the week while Gilbert was named a CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performer. Smith, who earned the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor following the shutout against the Cowgirls, has started the last seven matches upon her return from the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team and helped the Longhorns to a 5-1-1 record. She owns five shutouts this season, the second most by a rookie in program history. In Big 12 play, the Plano, Texas, product has surrendered just one goal in five matches and owns the highest save percentage during league action at .952. Gilbert played a key role against Oklahoma State, helping Smith and the defense record its third-straight shutout. The sophomore has been in for all 1,392 minutes this season and earned the start in every contest of her career. The Snohomish, Wash., native has been an anchor for a defense that has surrendered just one goal in five Big 12 matches, the fewest allowed in Texas history. The Longhorns return to action Friday with a 7 p.m. match at Baylor (11-1-4, 2-0-3 Big 12). Kick is set for 7 p.m. inside Betty Lou Mays Field.
