On Target with Kelly Wilson: October 14

On the road matches with Nebraska and Colorado ...
"We knew going in that it was going to be a tough weekend because Nebraska was undefeated in conference and Colorado always gives us a good game. On Friday night versus the Huskers, it didn't seem like we were on top of our game in the first half. We started off with a 1-0 lead, but they came back and scored three goals in a span of 15-20 minutes. Even so, we came back to make it 3-2 right before halftime. During the intermission, Coach (Petrucelli) told us that we needed to put more heart into the game and that you could tell that we weren't playing up to our fullest potential. I was really happy about how our team responded in the second half, though. We came close to tying the game up, but we were just very unlucky.

"The game versus Colorado was pretty much back and forth. They fought hard and we fought hard throughout the entire match. Actually, I think we had the most fouls we have ever had, but it was probably because we turned our game around from Friday night by playing hard. Before the half, we received a great goal from Kelsey (Carpenter) set up by Kelly (McDonald) that put us up 1-0. In the second half, we knew that we needed another goal to seal the deal, but they ended up breaking free and tied it up 1-1. Our defense fought hard, especially in the second half and in overtime. We had some opportunities to win, but we just didn't put it away. We obviously weren't happy about the loss, but we were happy about our performance as well as the heart and energy we put into the match."

On playing on a Thursday versus BYU ...
"It is kind of strange and a little different playing on a Thursday because we are used to the Friday/Sunday setup. Still, I think it is going to be nice because we will be able to play on Thursday and have more recovery time for our next game. Because the Big 12 Conference is so competitive, it is really hard to play Friday night and then turn around and play Sunday afternoon because you don't get a lot of recovery. Playing on Thursday is great because we can play a hard game on Thursday and have plenty of time to recover for the match on Sunday.

"BYU is a great team with a great history. They have had many great players come out of their soccer program, so we know that it is going to be a hard game. We are expecting a very tough match and hard battle, so that is what we are preparing for during practice this week."

On something you would like to do on campus before you graduate ...
"I have actually never been to a Longhorns football game. I like football and I enjoy watching it, but I haven't been to a game because soccer season presents conflicts between the two schedules. Our games fall on Friday and Sunday, which for away games means that we are out of town on the weekends. On the other hand, during home weekends, we might have the opportunity to go a Saturday college football game, but I haven't gone yet because I have either been tired and want some rest before our Sunday game or my family has been in town. However, I am hoping to catch one of the games soon. I have also never been to the Texas Revue, which is the student talent showcase that UT holds. I would love to go and see that talent show because I always hear so many good things about it."

On how often do your parents visit ...
"During the season, they will make all of the home games that they can. My younger sister plays soccer as well, so, with her league in Dallas, my parents drive to Austin on Friday to watch our game, leave on Saturday to go to Dallas and watch my sister play and then come back on Sunday morning to Austin to watch me play in the afternoon before they head back home. The drive from Odessa to Austin is about five hours, then from here to Dallas is about three hours so they do a lot of traveling in the fall. They want to make it to all of the home games since it is my senior year. They also try and make it out to as many away games as they can."

On things upcoming ...
"Well, I am hopefully graduating in December, so I am working hard to get my diploma a half-semester early. It is a really busy time for me because I am trying to finish my classes and we are in the middle of our season, plus I am also planning a wedding. It is hard to juggle everything, but school and soccer are what are most important right now. I am trying to make this soccer season one I will always remember and one that I can look back on and be proud of."
