Texas off to best start in program history
The Longhorns are off to their best start in program history with their 7-0-2 mark. Texas opponents have been held to just four goals during that stretch, a program-low.
Dominating defense
Not only are Texas' four goals allowed over the first nine matches a program-low, but they're also the second fewest allowed over any nine-game stretch in UT history. The Longhorns kept foes to three goals during a nine-game stint three times since the program started in 1994. The experienced back line has also held opponents to just 46 shots on goal, which averages out to just over five opportunities per match (5.11). Texas leads the Big 12 in goals allowed, goals-against average (0.40) and shutouts (five). UT is also fourth in the nation in save percentage (0.911).
Longhorns take league play on the road
UT continues conference play traveling to Nebraska this Friday, the Cornhuskers are off to a 2-0 start in the Big 12 (their best since 2004) with league wins over No. 25 Kansas and Missouri. Texas has won the last five meetings including two matchups in Lincoln.
Last Time Out: Texas A&M (Sept. 26)
The No. 7 Longhorns battled to a scoreless tie against No. 8 Texas A&M in front of a record crowd of 5,585 at Mike A. Myers Stadium Friday night in both squads' Big 12 Conference opener. UT was led by senior Jill Gilbeau, who fired a career-high four shots on goal. The tie was the first in the 14-year history of the series and marked the first time UT has opened league play with a tie.
Home Field Advantage
Texas currently owns a 22-game unbeaten streak at home dating back to the 2006 campaign, the longest such stretch in UT soccer history. The Horns' last loss at Mike A. Myers Field came on Sept. 29, 2006 to the No. 17 Oklahoma State Cowgirls (0-1). UT welcomes 11 opponents to their home pitch this season.
National Attention
The Longhorns are ranked in the top 10 in all four national coaches' polls entering the Nebraska- match. Texas is rated No. 7 by SoccerTimes.com, Soccer America and Soccer Buzz. UT climbed one spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas poll to the No. 8 slot. UT has been ranked in the nation's top 15 for 45-straight games dating back to Oct. 13, 2006.
Over it
Five of the Longhorns' nine matches have needed extra minutes this season. Those five have also come over the last seven games and have all required two 10 minute overtime periods, not just one. The Longhorns hold a 3-0-2 mark in overtime games and have played 86 extra minutes this season, which equates to almost a full match.
Fresh Faces
UT freshmen have made an immediate impact on the 2008 season. Courtney Goodson has recorded five goals and two assists while Amanda Lisberger has tallied two goals and one assist in that time. Kylie Doniak has scored once and added two assists. The freshman class accounts for 47 percent of UT's goals (8-of-17) and 42 percent of shots on goal (27-of-65), while adding five assists.
Petrucelli Joins Elite Company
Texas Head Coach Chris Petrucelli became just the seventh coach in Division I history to win 300 matches with the Horns' 3-0 shutout of UTSA on Sept. 5. The Longhorn mentor is just the fourth to accomplish the feat in 18 seasons or less. Petrucelli, in his 10th season at UT, owns a 303-82-26 record over 18 seasons and a 128-60-16 mark on the Forty Acres.
