Soccer ranked No. 2 in national poll
OAKLAND, Calif. -- With two wins over the weekend, the Longhorns improved to No. 2 in the country in the Soccer America magazine weekly national poll. The ranking is the highest weekly ranking this season as UT was rated third in the country on Sept. 4 by the Soccer Times.com online publication. Texas, now 8-1-1, won its third and fourth consecutive matches this weekend, and extended its unbeaten streak to six games. UT won a physical 2-1 contest over Wright State on Friday, Sept. 28, allowing the only goal scored in the last four matches. Texas opened Big 12 play with a 1-0 decision over visiting Texas Tech on Sunday, Sept. 30. The rise in ranking was sparked by a combination of Texas' offense which outscored its opponents 3-1 this weekend and the defense which only gave up a single goal over both matches. UT's dominance over the opposition contributed to Texas' improved ranking as the Longhorns have outscored its opponents 19-3 over the last six games. The Texas defense has been instrumental in the national recognition as well as UT gave up its first goal in the last four matches in the WSU contest. The shutout against Texas Tech on Sunday marked the fifth of the season for UT and the first this year in conference play. Over the six-game span that started with UTSA on Sept. 18, UT has only allowed three balls past UT goalkeepers junior Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) and senior Stephanie Connors (Carrollton, Texas). Texas travels to Ames, Iowa for a 7 p.m. CT match against Iowa State on Friday, Oct. 5. The Longhorns then return home to face Nebraska on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
