Gaul and Fortune earn Big 12 weekly accolades

Sept. 21, 2010

IRVING, Texas -- University of Texas sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Gaul and redshirt freshman forward Leah Fortune have been named the Big 12 Conference Defensive and Co-Newcomer of the Week after leading the Texas Soccer team to a 1-0 win over No. 10 BYU Monday night. In addition to earning their first career Big 12 honor, the pair helped the Horns to back-to-back wins over ranked opponents for the first time sinec 2006.

Against the Cougars, Gaul earned her third shutout of the season and posted four saves. The sophomore kept BYU, who entered the match averaging 2.25 goals per match, scoreless for just the second time this season. Gaul, who is one of 45 players nationally on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, picked up her second-straight shutout over a ranked opponent after holding No. 22 William & Mary scoreless a week prior.

Fortune scored her third goal of the season in the 1-0 win over BYU and lifted Texas to its first win over a top 10 team since 2007. The redshirt freshman scored just one minute and 44 seconds into the match to become the fastest Horn to net a goal since 2007. Fortune picked up her team-leading second game winner of the season and is now tied for the team lead with nine points off three goals and three assists.

The Longhorns open Big 12 Conference action this weekend at Nebraska on Friday, Sept. 24 (4:30 p.m. Central) and at Colorado on Sunday, Sept. 26 (2 p.m. Central).
