Soccer to host Neighborhood Longhorns Math Challenge Kick-Off
Sept. 10, 2008
AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Soccer team will host the inaugural University Federal Credit Union Neighborhood Longhorns Math Challenge Kick-Off on Wednesday, Sept. 10. The event will start at 6 p.m. Central at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Kick-Off is the official opening ceremony for involvement in the Neighborhood Longhorns Math Challenge Program. Students who attend the Kick-Off will participate in the program by visiting soccer skill stations and solving math problems related to the Texas Soccer team.
Funded through corporate contributions from University Federal Credit Union, the program assists students with mathematics skills and performance. The services of this program are offered to all participating Neighborhood Longhorns program schools.
The first part of the Math Challenge involves the mastery of elementary math skills. The second part of the challenge includes word problems. Assessments are based on the practice TAKS tests and the students' report card grades.
The program will provide an analysis of student performance after participating in the Math Challenge and indicate that student math deficits were remedied earlier in the school year, thereby enabling students to work at their appropriate grade level, as well as improving math TAKS scores.
