Lachappelle scores first career goal as a Longhorn
Sept. 3, 2012
Dalton Pool, Texas Media Relations AUSTIN, Texas — Sharis Lachappelle scored the Longhorns’ goal on Sunday afternoon against New Mexico. The tally was the result of a perfectly executed set play from 35 yards out. Senior Hannah Higgins and sophomore Allison Smith served as decoys on the play, both running over the ball before senior Kristin Cummins floated a flawlessly weighted ball to the far post. Lachappelle jumped over two opposing defenders to meet the curling cross at the edge of the six-yard box and headed it back across the goal into the far side netting. “It was an incredible feeling,” Lachappelle said. “Kristin played the perfect ball, and I just happened to be at the right place at the right time and put it in the side netting.” Lachappelle is one of the 11 newcomers for the Longhorns this season. Her story, however, is a little different. Lachappelle comes to the Forty Acres via a transfer from the University of Houston. She was a standout freshman for the Cougars last year, earning Third-Team All-Conference USA and C-USA All-Freshman Team selections. Lachappelle appeared in all 19 games and started 17 for UH. For the year, she ranked second on the team in goals (three), assists (three) and points (nine). Even though Lachappelle is now a sophomore, this feels a little like a second freshman year for her. “It has been great getting to know the girls here,” Lachappelle said. “I have had a lot fun so far this season. “I live with all the freshmen so people seem to forget I’m a sophomore sometimes. But everybody here is great, the coaches have been very helpful and it really wasn’t a big adjustment for me at all.”
Texas returns to action Thursday evening at BYU for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America College Game of the Week, televised by FOX Soccer. The contest against the Cougars will start at 8 p.m. Central. |
