Soccer talks to media before home-opening weekend
Aug. 26, 2010
Head Coach Chris Petrucelli On last year’s motivation for this year and the team as a whole: We have a pretty good team and I think that when you have talented players it is a lot easier to win games. Certainly we are motivated, playing hard and doing a lot of the little things right, but a lot of it comes down to that there are some pretty good players out there. On the home opener: It is an exciting game for everyone because it's our first chance to play a game that counts, in our stadium with our fans and family. I think our kids are really excited and they will play well. On if there are questions about the newcomers having nerves: I think that if you are too fired up you end up over the top and 15 minutes into the game you are exhausted. I think that you have to balance the energy and make sure you are saving some for later on in the game but make sure you start strong. On emphasis of this weekend: I think every game for us is important and we are really going at it one day and game at a time. I know I sound like a coach but it has to be like that for us and we are going to play Friday and play as well as we can and then look at it on Saturday and hopefully learn from it on Sunday and go at it as hard as we can. Junior Lucy Keith
On the team playing well right now: I think it starts from last season. We had a rough year then we went directly in to working hard all spring and summer, but we are here and ready to go and we have a new mentality. On home opener: It is going to be great to be at home. We did play LSU at home but this is the game that counts and it is going to be really exciting to have a lot of fans here and hopefully there will be a lot of spirit going on. On the tone the team needs to set: I think we have a lot to prove to ourselves that we are one of the best teams in the Big 12 and in the nation and to show our coaches that even though last year wasn't great, we can come back and show that to the university. We are competitors and fighters and we're going to be a force to be dealt with. Junior Kylie Doniak On team and motivation: We have some really talented players which isn’t much different from past years but I think this year we have the motivation from last year and from how hard we worked in the spring and summer that I think it’s going to take us a long way. On being nervous: I don’t know if we are too nervous about it I think we are just going to take it one game at a time starting with tomorrow night with UTSA and focus on that and getting better and starting strong and finishing even stronger. On the team’s identity: I think we pass more and we are definitely moving the ball really well right now which is a good start. We are getting forward a lot more in the attack and getting people forward in to the box too so that is really exciting. On Sunday’s game against USC: We are very excited to get some tough completion in both games and we are excited to see how we will do against both teams. Especially against USC I think we are going to really see how prepared we are. Freshman Gabby Zarnegar On the team and exhibition games: I thought it was really important to win our first game. It was huge and it made our team much more confident going into the season. On home opener: We are going to make a big splash. It is going to be great we are going to try to come out with a big win and we want to win with no goals on us but I think if we play our game and play confident like we have been doing we will be good.
