Soccer talks to media before home-opening weekend

Aug. 26, 2010

Head Coach Chris Petrucelli
On the win at N.C. State:
We are excited to win and anytime to win on the road is exciting and to open the season on the road, especially against a pretty good team, is always a difficult thing to do. We are excited to come back home this weekend and play on our field. We are moving forward that is a good thing. We are making progress and we are getting better and I think that if we can get a little better every day and every week that says good things.

On last year’s motivation for this year and the team as a whole: We have a pretty good team and I think that when you have talented players it is a lot easier to win games. Certainly we are motivated, playing hard and doing a lot of the little things right, but a lot of it comes down to that there are some pretty good players out there.

On the home opener: It is an exciting game for everyone because it's our first chance to play a game that counts, in our stadium with our fans and family. I think our kids are really excited and they will play well.

On if there are questions about the newcomers having nerves: I think that if you are too fired up you end up over the top and 15 minutes into the game you are exhausted. I think that you have to balance the energy and make sure you are saving some for later on in the game but make sure you start strong.

On emphasis of this weekend: I think every game for us is important and we are really going at it one day and game at a time. I know I sound like a coach but it has to be like that for us and we are going to play Friday and play as well as we can and then look at it on Saturday and hopefully learn from it on Sunday and go at it as hard as we can.

On starting the season with a win and an exhibition win:
The team was very excited about those two wins it was a great start and it gave us a lot of confidence going in to some of the bigger games coming up.

On the team playing well right now: I think it starts from last season. We had a rough year then we went directly in to working hard all spring and summer, but we are here and ready to go and we have a new mentality.

On home opener: It is going to be great to be at home. We did play LSU at home but this is the game that counts and it is going to be really exciting to have a lot of fans here and hopefully there will be a lot of spirit going on.

On the tone the team needs to set: I think we have a lot to prove to ourselves that we are one of the best teams in the Big 12 and in the nation and to show our coaches that even though last year wasn't great, we can come back and show that to the university. We are competitors and fighters and we're going to be a force to be dealt with.

Junior Kylie Doniak
On the team's two games so far:
I think what we have come out of our two games with is that this year is gong to be different and we are going to make a statement. We are going to really support each other and win some games.

On team and motivation: We have some really talented players which isn’t much different from past years but I think this year we have the motivation from last year and from how hard we worked in the spring and summer that I think it’s going to take us a long way.

On the home opener: We definitely want to make a statement tomorrow night. We are excited to have this whole weekend at home and play in front of our crowd and our families and friends. I think we are going to come out fired up and score some goals.

On being nervous: I don’t know if we are too nervous about it I think we are just going to take it one game at a time starting with tomorrow night with UTSA and focus on that and getting better and starting strong and finishing even stronger.

On the team’s identity: I think we pass more and we are definitely moving the ball really well right now which is a good start. We are getting forward a lot more in the attack and getting people forward in to the box too so that is really exciting.

On Sunday’s game against USC: We are very excited to get some tough completion in both games and we are excited to see how we will do against both teams. Especially against USC I think we are going to really see how prepared we are.

On this weekend:
I feel like every weekend is really important but since this is our first weekend at home starting our real season, it's going to be huge and a really exciting game. But most importantly it will show how much progress we've made so far this season as a team.

On the team and exhibition games: I thought it was really important to win our first game. It was huge and it made our team much more confident going into the season.

On home opener: We are going to make a big splash. It is going to be great we are going to try to come out with a big win and we want to win with no goals on us but I think if we play our game and play confident like we have been doing we will be good.
