Road trippin' with Soccer: Christina Vaughn
Texas freshman Christina Vaughn, affectionately known as 'Tina' by her teammates, is on her first road trip with the soccer team. The Longhorns are in Alabama, preparing for their season opener on Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. CT against the Auburn Tigers. Amidst the excitement of traveling and potentially playing in her first match at the collegiate level, Vaughn invited TexasSports.com into her world to get a glimpse of life as a Texas Soccer player. Below is an entry from the rookie discussing Wednesday's journey from Austin to Auburn, Alabama for the upcoming contest. Hey everyone! I got up on Wednesday morning, ready to go! It's my first time traveling with the team, so I'm really anxious to see what life is like away from Austin. I left my dorm room for our first road trip with my roommate, (freshman goalkeeper) Avery (Allen). We arrived at Myers around 7:45 a.m. (so early!!) and left with the coaches, staff and other players for the airport around 8. Two hours later, we made it through security, grabbed some breakfast and waited at the gate to board our first flight. The first leg was a short 31-minute flight from Austin to Dallas-Fort Worth. Our second segment, from Dallas to Atlanta, was a little longer, just under two hours. With the brief time change, we arrived in Atlanta at 3:30 p.m. Eastern but then we switched back to Central time (!), completing the hour and a half drive to Alabama around 4 p.m. Central. After stopping for some snacks, we checked into the hotel and then left for practice at the Auburn Soccer Complex. It's my first time (of course) playing at Auburn and even traveling to Alabama. The facilities were good and the campus is beautiful ... but I do miss Myers Stadium and Austin already! After we put on our cleats, we hit the field to work on some corners, some set plays and some light stuff to get ready for our opening match. It was a pretty easy practice because we have a lot ahead of us in the game. We practiced two hours and then headed back to our hotel to change for dinner. After practice, we showered and went to Logan's Restaurant for a quick bite. The coaches treated us to Dairy Queen afterwards, which was great! When we finished there and came back to the hotel, I hung out with Avery and her family. We appreciate them driving four hours from Starkville, Mississippi for the game this weekend! We turned in around 11 p.m. because we had to be ready for breakfast and practice in the morning! More food and more workouts to come! Hook 'Em!! P.S. Stay tuned here at TexasSports.com for more journal entries from my teammates on our season-opening road trip.
