HIROSHIMA, Japan - University of Texas freshman goalkeeper Abby Smith and the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team began the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup with a 4-0 victory over Ghana inside Hiroshima Big Arch Stadium on Monday afternoon. The victory improved the Americans' record to 13-1-0 against international competition in 2012.

Smith did not enter the Monday match as goalkeeper Bryane Heaberlin went the distance and made three saves. The USA now prepares for its second Group D match, against China PR at 4:50 a.m. Central on Thursday, Aug. 23. The match will be broadcast live on ESPNU and ESPN3. Following Thursday's contest, the squad completes Group D competition against Germany on Monday, Aug. 27, at 1:50 a.m. Central at Miyagi Stadium in Rifu, Japan. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and ESPN3.

The top two teams from each group advance to the Aug. 30-31 quarterfinals, with the winners playing in the semifinals on Sept. 4. The championship is scheduled for Sept. 8.
