Carpenter and Kennedy tabbed Preseason All-Big 12 performers

DALLAS -- University of Texas sophomore forward Kelsey Carpenter and sophomore midfielder Caitlin Kennedy were named to the 2005 Preseason All-Big 12 Soccer Team as announced by the conference on Thursday, Aug. 18.

Additionally, the Longhorns were selected to finish third behind Texas A&M and Nebraska in the league's preseason poll. UT, which tied for third in last year's final conference standings with a 6-3-1 mark, received a total of 81 points to place third in the poll ahead of fourth-place Kansas while also garnering one first-place vote.

Both the preseason poll and the Preseason All-Big 12 squad were decided by by a vote of the conference's 11 head soccer coaches with each coach not permitted to vote for his or her respective team or players.

Carpenter (Allen, Texas) and Kennedy (Euless, Texas) were among 12 players chosen as members of the Preseason All-Big 12 Team and the preseason accolades marked the first of their respective careers. Both positioned among the top four on the team in scoring one year ago, Carpenter and Kennedy were named to the Big 12's All-Freshman Team in 2005 as they combined for 12 goals and 12 assists for 36 points. In addition, while Carpenter finished her freshman year ranked second on the team in goals (8), points (22) and shots (33), Kennedy became the Longhorns' second-ever Soccer America Freshman All-American in 2005 after turning in a 14-point campaign.

Texas officially opens the 2005 regular season at home against SMU on Friday, Aug. 26 at 7:30 p.m. Central.
