Campin' in Corpus with Niki Arlitt: August 11
Aug. 11, 2009
Hey Longhorn Fans,
We've been in Corpus Christi for a week now and workouts are starting to taper off just a little. They were really intense at the beginning but have now been getting a little easier. I'm not sure if that's because we're getting used to them or they are a little less demanding, but let's go with we're getting used to them.
Everyone's spirits have been really high, which has been so helpful when we're doing three workouts a day. It's really great to see the whole team pulling together to make sure that everyone gets through the tough training sessions, and no one is left behind. Our team chemistry keeps on growing and it's making this preseason camp that much more fun.
Like I mentioned last time, we were about to start the sand workouts and I had no idea what we were getting into. That first workout was absolutely one of the hardest workouts I've ever done at UT. They are brutal but you really have to make sure you are helping everyone else get through it too. That type of workout is really more of a mental thing than a physical work out because you get to that last stretch and want to quit and give up because it's so hard and that's where the team comes in. We've been doing such a good job at getting keeping everyone going. Matt Mott also really stepped it up and cheered us on a lot through those workouts. He's turned into our own little personal cheerleader and providing us with a lot of encouragement, which has been great.
We finally had an off day on Saturday and after a team meal at the hotel, we put on a youth clinic at our practice field. It was really fun to get out there and teach the kids. I also kind of felt it was a good way for us to give back to the Corpus community since they've been so accepting and supportive of us and of course let us train on their fields. The kids were all excited and after we did an autograph and photo session at the end, I think that everyone really enjoyed the experience.
We leave Corpus tomorrow and head to Baton Rouge to prepare for our exhibition match against Louisiana State on Friday. We're all so excited to actually play in a match against another team. I think everyone just wants to see how our hard work is going to transfer to the field and not just the physical aspect, but the team dynamic as well. I personally really want to see how all of our bonding and great team chemistry plays out during a match. This year just feels so much different and like we're one big family, so hopefully we can get onto the pitch and all work together to win some games!
Well, off to our final sand workout of the year, wish us luck and I'll check back in soon! Thanks for all the support and Hook'em Horns!
