Campin' in Corpus with Emily Anderson: August 8

Aug. 8, 2009

Senior Emily Anderson checked in with TexasSports while down in Corpus Christi to update fans on the team's preseason training camp. For more updates and photos from Corpus, make sure you check out Texas Soccer's Twitter page.

What has been the biggest difference in this year's preseason training? One of the more noticeable things is that there is definitely a really good team chemistry going on this year. We've all been very encouraging to each other to get everyone in the best place possible. We also set some preseason team goals to make sure we all are on the same page going forward and know where we want to be once the season gets going. The camaraderie has just been really good and hopefully that will translate to the field when the season starts.

As a senior, are you going into this year with a different mentality than before? It actually feels very similar. I think I'm definitely a little more competitive this year just to get things done and end on a note that I want to end on. So other than just being more competitive, I still have the same hard work ethic and try to make sure that everyone is in sync and playing well together.

What's been one of the benefits of training in Corpus Christi? I just remember when we used to train in Austin, everyone would have specific meetings and other places that they needed to be, so a lot of time the team would be split up during breaks. While we're down here in Corpus though, everyone has been trying to do things together. There was a group today that went to the aquarium and then we had the youth clinic we put on this morning. We just get to spend a lot more time with each other and get to know everyone better.

So you guys have done two sand workouts so far, how tough are they? Training in the sand is pretty tough. Luckily for us that's been the one thing that has really brought us together. You have to encourage everyone to work hard because it's so difficult and if you don't have anyone there, running on sand is not easy. When the whole eam is yelling at you and encouraging, it makes you dig that much deeper to finish what you started and just give it all you can.

How do you think the sand workouts will help you guys during the season? I think it really helps our endurance and will get our muscles prepared for longer workouts. I think training in the sand, is equivalent to working three times harder as it would be off the sand. Hopefully that will get our legs ready and prepared and have training sessions that are longer and intense as the season goes on. It will also help us stay fresh during the 90 minute games.

How was the youth clinic this morning? You guys had a good turnout, how did everyone like taking part in that? The clinic was really similar to what we experience while working camps during the summer. The ages went down to about four years old all the way up to 16 and then we would split them up by age. We set up different stations, very similar to our day camps. I had a lot of fun and afterward we had an autograph/photo session with everyone on the team that I think all of the campers really enjoyed. It's great to see such a good turnout to support us down here in Corpus.
