Postcard from Finland: July 13

U.S. Under-21 youth soccer national team participants Kelsey Carpenter and Stephanie Logterman are in Finland for the 2007 Nordic Cup from July 12-24. In the first postcard installment, Logterman details the 14-hour trip from the training facility in New Jersey to the cold and rainy conditions in Finland.

Greetings Longhorns fans!

We have arrived in FINLAND! After an eight-hour plane ride followed by a six-hour bus ride, we made it to our hotel safely. We've had no time to rest. Almost 30 minutes after arriving, we had to report to the bus to go to the field for our first training session. The rainy weather followed us from Texas, but the hot summer temperatures did not -- it's 15 degrees Celsius.

The hotel is awesome from top to bottom. The bathroom floors are HEATED and we have robes, little Japanese slippers, and chocolates awaiting us on our beds.

Kelsey is fortunate enough to have a room to herself tonight because her roommate Amanda Cinalli does not arrive until tomorrow. My roommate is (Arizona State's) Manya Makoski. We are both currently enrolled in online classes, so lots of studying will be going on in our room.

In between training and studying, I (Steph) am reading Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince AGAIN, because I want to refresh my mind before I read the next book which comes out while I am still over here. PLEASE don't tell me what happens when I get back to Texas, as I want to be surprised!

The next three days will be spent on training and preparation for our upcoming games. Kelsey and I are excited to start out Nordic Cup with a win. Sorry we didn't attach a picture to the postcard, but believe us when we say that you don't want to see us after 15 hours of travel. Keep your eyes open for more postcards. We'll talk to y'all soon!

Hook 'em,
Kelsey Carpenter and Stephanie Logterman
