She also played on the ODP Region III Team from 2011-11, and participated in the ODP Region Invitational in 2009 and 2010. In high school, she was named to the first team all-district in 2009-2011. She was the District 5-5A Freshman of the Year. Shimmick recently spent some time with TexasSports.com as she prepares for her freshman season with the Longhorns. As a native Texan, are you excited to attend The University of Texas and represent the burnt orange in competition? When I told my grandfather, he started crying. He was just so happy that he could come to UT and watch me play. Everyone is excited that I'm staying in Texas. What goals and dreams do you want to pursue athletically while at UT? I've been playing soccer since I was 4. I just enjoy playing. It's almost a stress release for me. When I first started, I just wanted to be able to play in college. Now that I've finally reached that, I just want to keep getting better so I can keep playing. Of course, everyone at this level dreams of a national championship. I want to be the best that I can be, so I can help our team be as good as it can be. What excites you about training under Coach Kelly and her staff? They're such good people. They're already so involved with all of us and wish for our success as people. To play for them, knowing that they're always there for us, just feels great because you want to be in an environment where you know people want you there. What are your early impressions of the summer conditioning plan, and what are your goals personally before you arrive for preseason? I want to be able to come in there and play as I'm expected to. Throughout this summer, I'm just going to push myself as hard as possible and do what the manual describes each day. Although, some of the (running) times seem impossible. I keep striving and pushing for it.
What are your academic plans while studying at UT? I really would like to be a nurse. Hopefully, I'll be able to do well in my studies and enter UT's nursing program. I want to do my best in class and on the field. I know that will be difficult, but I also know that I'll have people behind me and supporting me. So, I'm confident that I can play well in soccer and keep my grades up. |
