Meet the newcomers: Brinkley Field

May 30, 2012

AUSTIN, Texas – Brinkley Field has been a member of the Dallas-Solar Girls Club team since 2003. In her time with Solar, Field has won the US Youth Soccer National Championship in 2010, and the Disney Showcase in both 2009 and 2010.

Field has also been a four-year starter for Lake Highlands High School, and she’s been the leading goal scorer and captain for Lake Highlands the past three years.

She recently spent some time with TexasSports.com as she prepares for her freshman season with the Longhorns.

As a native Texan, are you excited to attend The University of Texas and represent the burnt orange in competition? I was born and raised a Longhorn, so to be able to play soccer there is pretty much a dream come true.

What goals and dreams do you want to pursue athletically while at UT? Coach Kelly has put such a big emphasis on us winning championships, so I think all of our dreams are to win the NCAA title. But also, just working progressively toward that, like winning a Big 12 championship, is part of the step-by-step process. With a new team, new coach, I just can’t wait to get down there and begin working with the team. That’s what I’m looking forward to.

What excites you about training under Coach Kelly and her staff? Ever since I first talked to Angela, when she called me on the phone, she puts such a focus on understanding that we are a family, and what we do as a team affects each of us. Our actions have reciprocal consequences. Playing well, working hard, and doing all of that together, is something that I’m attached to.

What are your early impressions of the summer conditioning plan, and what are your goals personally before you arrive for preseason? When I got the manual, it arrived at my house on a Monday morning, and I woke up to it on my doorstep. I thought, “Oh my goodness. What a nice little surprise.” I spent that entire morning just reading over it, because it’s pretty comprehensive, I have to admit. I was so excited for it to come in, because it lays out exactly what you need to do. My goal is to come in as fit as possible. I’m working with that thing like it’s my sister. I’m going at it. The weights are stretching me, because I haven’t lifted much before. I’m getting adjusted to different moves and using some muscles I don’t normally use.

What are your academic plans while studying at UT? I’m definitely going to use the academic resources to the fullest advantage. While soccer is important to me, academics are more important, because that is what will make my life. My plan is to major in biology. I would like to go into medical school and eventually become a dermatologist. I’m red-haired and have fair skin, so I’ve been taught to put sunscreen on since I was little. I just want to protect people and research melanoma and hopefully find a cure for that.
