Extra minutes with Erica: April 9
April 9, 2009 Hey Everybody, As you know we played North Carolina, the defending National Champions, about a week and a half ago, and it was a really cool experience for all of us. The place where we played in Houston was a really nice high school and the Soccer Club that hosted us was amazing! The hospitality was so great from decorations in the locker room, to giving us cowboy hats during pregame introductions, to having a fiesta after the game! There were tons of people at the game so it didn't feel like your typical Spring match. From the first whistle, UNC came at us from the start and we were on our heels quite a bit in the first half. We went into half time down 1-0 and Chris was not so happy with us. He wasn't mad because the score was bad, he was just disappointed because we weren't competing as hard as we could have and needed to put into game everything that we had been working on so far this Spring. Needless to say, we played much better in the second half. We had a couple opportunities that unfortunately we didn't capitalize on, but it at least turned into a good soccer game. Towards the end of the game, though, we tried to do what any team would do when you're losing, and push an extra player in hopes to score the tying goal. After that, it didn't take but a couple minutes for UNC to take advantage and were able to score two quick goals. Regardless of the score, in the second half, I think it is safe to say we were all much happier with the way we competed and the way we played. More than anything, it made us realize that no matter who we are playing we can hang in there with anyone as long as we give it everything we have and that is a really exciting feeling that we can carry with us going into next Fall. The fiesta afterwards was amazing, too! It was UNC, people from the Albion Soccer Club, and us. The lady that hosted us in her home had delicious Mexican food catered and had a mariachi band come play for us live. Pretty much, it turned into a night of eating, laughing, the Macarena, getting to know the North Carolina team, a dance circle, and a pretty sweet Congo line!
Since then, we've had a week and a half of practice and right now we're all getting ready to go home and see our families for Easter, and we can't wait! Once we come back we will have another week and then we are in the final stretch of Spring season. We will come back to a normal week of practices, preparing for our second to last game on Friday, April 17th against Monterrey Tech at St. Stephen's School in Austin. Other than that, school is just kicking up into high gear as everyone's classes are starting to cram in their last projects and tests before final exams. The good news is we only have nine more Tuesday/Thursday classes and 13 more Monday/Wednesday/Friday classes left...but who's counting? Hope to see you all at our game next Friday! Hook `Em! |
