Soccer upends Borreguitas del Tec de Monterrey, 3-1

AUSTIN, Texas -- Three different Longhorns players scored goals to lead The University of Texas women's soccer team to a 3-1 exhibition match victory over Borreguitas del Tec de Monterrey at Whitaker Fields on Friday, April 1. Notably, the win over the defending college national champions from Mexico marked the second straight spring exhibition match triumph for UT this year.

Starting quickly, the Longhorns broke on top 1-0 in the third minute when freshman forward Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) rocketed a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the opposing goal from 10 yards out. During the remainder of the first half, that one-goal advantage managed to hold up as Texas utilized an organized defensive front around goalkeeper Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas).

Eleven minutes into the second half, UT struck again to pull in front 2-0 when freshman Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) lofted a corner kick into the box that sophomore Priscilla Fite (Irving, Texas) chested down and half-volleyed into the side netting. The Longhorns then grabbed a 3-0 advantage 10 minutes later when freshman defender Leslie Imber (Houston, Texas) fought off numerous defenders before breaking free down the left side and playing a ball into the box. While the Borreguitas' goalkeeper got her hands on Imber's service, the ball came loose and Kennedy managed to get her foot on it and find the back of the net. A direct kick from 25 yards out in the 77th minute would then get Borreguitas on the board as the shot dipped over Texas' defensive wall and beat a diving Melissa Adrouny (Monte Sereno, Calif.) in the UT net, but that was as close as the score would become as the Longhorns' defense held its opposition in check over the final 13 minutes to seal the win.

While Carpenter notched her team-leading fifth goal of the spring exhibition season and Fite tallied her first, Kennedy picked up three points on the evening with one goal and one assist to pace the Texas offensive attack.

Up next, the Longhorns take to the road for their fourth of five spring exhibition matches as they travel to Celebration Park in Allen, Texas, for a match against Oral Roberts at 6:30 p.m. Central on Saturday, April 9. Of note, the match is part of a college showcase event for club teams, but also features games between several college squads, including SMU, Texas Tech, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Air Force.
