Jan. 23, 2009
AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas seniors Kasey Moore and Stephanie Logterman were named to the U.S. Under-23 Women's National Team that will compete in Spain, as announced by U.S. Soccer on Thursday. Bill Irwin from the University of Portland returns to coach the group that will face Norway on Feb. 4 and England on Feb. 6. All matches will take place in La Manga, Spain. This is the first U-23 roster that features a majority of professional players, with 11 of 18 recently drafted in the new Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) league on Jan. 16. Moore, who has eight previous caps with the U-23 squad, was selected as the 15th overall pick by the Boston Breakers. Logterman was picked 20th by the St. Louis Athletica. Moore is no stranger to the national scene as she was a member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team in 2006, the Under-17 National Team in 2003 and as a captain in 2004 and the Under-16 National Team in 2002. She also participated in the U.S. Under-19 (2003-2005) and Under-20 National Team (2005) pools. Logterman also has a wealth of national playing experience as she was a member of five U.S. Youth National Teams: Under-16 (2002), Under-17 (2003), Under-19 (2003-2004), Under-20 (2006) and Under-21 (2007). Moore started in all 90 matches during her four-year career as a Longhorn. The two-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year shared the team lead in scoring during 2008 with 16 points off six goals and four assists. The three-time All-American defender finished her collegiate career ranked first in the Texas record books in matches played (91), second in game-winning goals (nine), ninth goals (19) and 10th in points (50). Logterman, a three-time All-Big 12 selection, played at the forward, midfield and defender positions for UT in 2008. During the same season, Logterman scored a career-high four goals and added three assists for a career-high 11 points. Along with Moore, Logterman also anchored a Texas backline that recorded back-to-back 10-shutout seasons (2006-2007) before holding 11 scoreless contests against opponents a year ago.
In the 12-year history of the Longhorns soccer program, Texas has had 25 youth national team members and two national team selections.
