Soccer beats Seattle, 1-0, for nonconference win
Oct. 23, 2011
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Soccer team defeated Seattle, 1-0, for a nonconference victory on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium. UT’s goal came in the 73rd minute off a corner kick taken by Kylie Doniak. Doniak sent in a curling left-footed cross to the near post, where Brooke Gilbert was able to deflect the ball into the back of the net past Seattle’s senior goalkeeper Madison Goverde. The goal was the first of Gilbert’s career, and the assist was Doniak’s fourth of the season. Despite starting three freshmen in the backline, UT’s defense was strong throughout, as the Longhorns allowed only four shots on goal. UT’s offense dominated most of the play racking up 13 total shots and seven corner kicks. UT returns to Big 12 play Friday, Oct. 28 when the Longhorns host the Texas A&M Aggies in a 6 p.m. contest at Mike A. Myers Stadium. TEXAS QUOTES Head coach Chris Petrucelli On telling players to move on field: The first half we were really stagnant. I mean, I was trying to get them to move. It is a mentality, and the girls had a more of an aggressive mentality in the second half. On the change of mentality: It led to better movement and more of the idea of trying to make something to happen as oppose to waiting for something to happen. On recent season record: We’ve played well recently. The record sometimes shows it, sometimes it doesn’t. We feel good at where we are at. We are in a good position. We have a big game coming up, a hard game coming up, but we will be ready. Senior forward Kylie Doniak On changing of possession: In the first half, we did a good job just keeping the ball. I think we were a little afraid to go forward and put our attack on them. Once we started getting the mindset that we were going to go get a goal, then it changed the attack a little bit. Sophomore defender Nina Frausing Pedersen On playing every position: This week we were practicing me as a target forward. So forwards are just out wide, and they keep the ball in and play the opponents good. That was my role today, and then I played center back in the end.
