Soccer rallies to tie Texas Tech 2-2 in double overtime
Oct. 23, 2009 AUSTIN, Texas -- Down 2-0 late in the second half, Texas earned goals from sophomore Amanda Lisberger and senior Emily Anderson to rally for a 2-2 double overtime tie with Texas Tech Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Longhorns picked up one point in the Big 12 race and are now 7-7-3 overall and 3-2-3 in Big 12 play. TTU moves to 8-7-2 and 3-3-2 in league action. Tech got on the board in the 16th minute when freshman Dawn Ward connected on a corner kick from Connor Williams. Ward was standing near the left post and headed in the corner right over UT keeper Alexa Gaul for the 1-0 advantage. The Red Raiders extended their lead to 2-0 off of another corner kick in the 49th minute. Williams once again sent in the assist that found Haley Fowler in the center of the box who headed in the score. Texas wouldn't go down without a fight though as the Horns pulled within one in the 73rd minute. Freshman Becka Rivera fired a shot that bounced off TTU keeper Colleen Pitts. Lisberger was there to pick up the rebound and one-touched it over Pitts for her first goal of the year. With time winding down, Texas continued its offensive attack firing three shots over the next 15 minutes and keeping the ball in its attacking third. The offensive pressure paid off when freshman Kristin Cummins volleyed the ball over the Tech backline drawing Pitts off her line. Anderson won the ball off the bounce and fired into a wide open net for the equalizer. It was Anderson's first goal of the season and Cummins' first assist. The match went into overtime with neither team putting up a decent look over the first 10 minute period. Only Texas Tech was able to produce a shot in the second overtime ending the game in a 2-2 tie.
The Longhorns posted a season-high 18 shots, including an 11-3 advantage in the first half, and had a season-high 12 corner kicks. Texas returns to the pitch for its final home match of the season on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. against Colorado. With the one point from the tie, Texas is now tied for fifth in the league with 12 points. POST MATCH NOTES POST MATCH QUOTES On thoughts going into the final two games: I like the fact that we scored a couple goals tonight, and we didn't give much up. Just two corners and we have got to be a little better on second chance goals. On the overtime strategy: Well we were playing for the win. We went with two forwards when we were down and we went back to two when we tied. We wanted to continue to press forward and try to win. |
