Two first-half goals fuel No. 18 Soccer to 2-1 upset win over No. 14 Colorado
BOULDER, Colo. -- Sharp passes, good ball control and an organized defense fueled a 2-1 win by the No. 18 Texas soccer team over the No.14 Colorado Buffs on a chilly Sunday afternoon in front of 956 fans at Prentup Field in Boulder, Colo.
UT moves to 10-3-1 and 3-1-1 in the Big 12 Conference under eighth-year head coach Chris Petrucelli. No. 14 Colorado falls to 7-4-2 on the season and 1-3-1 in the league.
Senior captain Carrie Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.) scored at the 41:58 mark. Junior forward Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) dribbled on the near side, towards the outside corner. She found a streaking Schmit in front of the goal and passed to the fourth-year veteran who chipped it in over CU goalkeeper Kara Linder.
Less than two minutes later, freshman Emily Anderson (Austin, Texas) scored the first goal of her career. Schmit fed her the ball and after a collision with the goalkeeper, put it in the empty net at 43:25 on the clock.
Texas took 11 shots with four attempts on goal. The Longhorns had five cornerkicks and 10 fouls.
Sophomore goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) registered two saves and allowed one goal in 90 minutes of action. She helped the UT defense keep CU out of the goal for the final 83 minutes of the match.
Colorado recorded one goal on eight overall shots. The lone Buff score came at 5:06 with freshman Nikki Marshall connecting on a pass from senior Laura Munnelly.
UT is 3-1 against ranked opponents this season and victorious over teams with a better rating
With today's score, Schmit has five goals this year, which is her career-high for goals in a single season. Her season total of 15 points is five better than her previous season high (10 as a sophomore in 2004) and her 37 total career points put her two shy of 10th place on the all-time list.
Texas will split action next weekend, playing a non-conference match against Sam Houston State (presented by Starwood Hotels) on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. (Central). UT will travel to Lincoln, Neb., for a Big 12 conference game against Nebraska on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. (Central).
NOTES: UT has held 14 opponents to a total of four goals in the second period this year... It is the second time in program history the Longhorns have won six matches on the road... It is UT's seventh consecutive season with double digit wins.
