Soccer rallies for a 3-2 win over Texas Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas -- Sophomore midfielder Carrie Schmit (La Mesa, Calif.) scored 39 seconds into the second overtime to complete a comeback from two goals down as No. 22 Texas (5-3, 1-1 Big 12) rallied for a 3-2 win over Texas Tech (3-6, 0-1 Big 12) in front of 233 fans at R.P. Fuller Stadium on Friday, Sept. 24.
The Red Raiders grabbed a quick 1-0 lead a little over six minutes into the match when Jenifer Thomas took a pass from Jenna Wetzel in stride, got behind the UT defense and fired a shot into the back of the UT net. Tech would up then up its lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute of play as a Lauren Lothrop shot off the crossbar resulted in a rebound in front of the Texas net that Priscilla Esquivel finished. Now trailing by a pair of scores, the Longhorns answered at 37:13 as Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas) slid a pass behind the Tech defense to Ashley Foster (Athens, Ga.), who slipped a shot by Tech goalkeeper Tina Rincon to cut the Horns' deficit to 2-1. While UT looked for the equalizer before the first 45 minutes of action came to a close, Texas Tech's defense held strong to preserve the advantage at the intermission.
After the beginning of the second half was delayed due to lightning, Texas managed to knot the score at 2-2 in the 64th minute when Wilson crossed a ball into the box from the left side that Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas) directed into the net for her third goal of the season. Although both sides attempted to grab the lead over the final 26 minutes, the 2-2 tie was in tact at the end of regulation. Following a scoreless first sudden-victory overtime period, the two teams squared off for a second 10-minute extra session. It was in that final period of play that Schmit re-directed a low driven cross from Karen Haight (Beaverton, Ore.) into the bottom right corner of the Tech goal just 39 seconds into the session to complete the Longhorns comeback and give UT a 3-2 victory. While Texas goalkeeper Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) tallied four saves on the night to earn the win, Tech's Rincon incurred the loss despite posting seven saves.
The Texas offense, which outshot the Red Raiders by a 13-9 margin, was led by the midfield tandem of Schmit and Kennedy, who accounted for four points, Foster, who recorded her first career goal, and Wilson, who with two assists upped her season point total to 19 and moved within three assists of setting the UT career record in that category. Tech, meanwhile, had its attack led by Thomas, who fired a team-best two shots and notched her second career goal, and Esquivel, who tallied her seventh goal of the season.
Up next, the Horns travel to Waco, Texas, to face the Baylor Bears in a 1 p.m. conference match on Sunday, Sept. 26.
