Soccer upends SMU 1-0
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Longhorns defense warded off 13 Mustangs shots to make a Kelsey Carpenter first-half goal stand up and propel Texas to a 1-0 victory over SMU at Myers Stadium on Friday, Aug. 26, in front of 934 fans.
The victory not only marked Texas' (1-0) first-ever win over SMU (0-1), but also gave the Horns 13 straight triumphs at home dating back to the 2004 season.
Both teams played an even first period with the Longhorns slightly outshooting the Mustangs by an 8-6 margin and starting goalkeepers Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) for Texas and Ashley Gunter for SMU each recording one save. As a result, the contest remained scoreless until the final two minutes of action when Carpenter (Allen, Texas) ran onto a ball slotted by Julie Gailey (San Ramon, Calif.) and flicked on by Caitlin Kennedy (Euless, Texas). The Preseason All-Big 12 performer then dribbled past Gunter and fired a shot into the back of the net at 43:23 for a 1-0 Longhorns advantage.
In the second period, both teams pressured early but both Gunter and new Longhorns keeper Dianna Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) were up to the task to keep to 1-0 score in tact. Carpenter then received her second yellow card of the match in the 62nd minute, which resulted in an automatic red card and ejection. With the Horns now down one player for the remainder of the game, SMU stepped up its attack and managed seven shots in the period, but Pfenninger made two saves, including one from point blank range inside the final two minutes, to help Texas preserve the shutout victory. While Hall picked up the win in goal for Texas, Gunter shouldered the loss despite a two-save performance.
Pacing the respective offenses were the tandem of Carpenter and freshman Kasey Moore (Mission Viejo, Calif.) for UT, who combined for eight shots overall and three on goal, and Jena Lind for SMU, who collected a team-best three shots during the match.
Up next, the Longhorns host the Auburn Tigers in a 7 p.m. Central match at Myers Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 28. Of note, the game will be televised live by ESPNU.
