Aug. 22, 2011
HOUSTON, Texas – The Longhorns scored two quick goals midway through the first half and added a third in the game’s waning moments for a 3-0 win over the Houston Cougars at Robertson Stadium on Monday evening. The win evened Texas’ record at 1-1-0 and Houston fell to 0-1-0. The Longhorns snapped an 11-game stretch of not reaching the three-goal mark. Texas drew first blood 25:25 into the first half. Taking a direct kick from 55 yards out, 20 yards to the right of the top of the center circle, Nina Frausing Pedersen sent a ball deep into the penalty box. Lucy Keith drifted back to the top of the goal area, leaped high and headed the ball for a redirection over the hands of the Cougars’ goalkeeper. While the thoughts of the first goal still fresh in everyone’s mind, Texas tacked on a second tally less than two minutes later for a 2-0 lead. Weaving down the left side of the pitch, Lexi Harris launched a shot from 28 yards out at the corner of the penalty area into the upper 90 of the far side of the goal. The Longhorns tacked on a goal in the 90th minute with Kristin Cummins notching her first goal of the season on an assist from Hannah Higgins. The Cougars best opportunity to score came in the 51st minute, when Sami Sackos gathered the ball at the right corner of the goal area and shanked a ball across the face of the goal and wide left. Taylor Knaack had a pair of solid opportunities to score midway through the second half, but was inches high on a pair of shots, including a kick from 15 yards and a header from 10 yards. The Longhorns owned a 14-8 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Alexa Gaul went the distance in goal for the Longhorns to pick up her first shutout of the season and the 12th of her career. Texas returns to action on Friday with another road contest. The Longhorns travel to Athens for a 6 p.m. Central contest against the Georgia Bulldogs. TEXAS QUOTES On Lexi Harris’ goal form 35 yards out: Lexi got the goal wide and cut it back in. She told me she saw the goalkeeper out of position so she sent it in. Lexi is a really good player and we’re starting to find out how good.
