Soccer takes down North Texas 1-0 in spring exhibition match

March 2, 2013

AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Soccer team improved to 3-0 during its spring season with a 1-0 victory over North Texas on Saturday afternoon inside Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field. The lone goal of the match occurred just before the end of the first 30-minute period. Saturday's match consisted of three 30-minute periods.

The score came off a corner kick as Sharis Lachappelle served up a curling left-footed cross that found the head of the towering Lindsey Meyer on the back post. Meyer's header sent the ball into the near upper corner of the goal.

While the North Texas goalie was able to swat the ball out of her own goal, the referee ruled that the ball had crossed the line. Even if the ball had not been ruled to have crossed the line, Texas' Allison Smith was there to knock the rebound back into the goal.

Texas relied on its solid back line to hang on for the victory. Last year, Texas' defense was one of the best in the Big 12 Conference. With all of its back four returning, UT expects to be just as good if not better next year.

"I thought the back line was really good today, and I told them that after the game," head coach Angela Kelly said. "We just keep getting better and better as a team. I'm really pleased with the girls so far this spring."

Texas has two more exhibitions this spring. The next is at Texas State on March 23. The Longhorns wrap up their spring season at Rice on April 7.
