Soccer downs St. Edward's 2-1 in spring action
Feb. 23, 2013
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Soccer downed St. Edward’s 2-1 in its second exhibition match of the spring season Friday night. The scrimmage lasted only a little more than 60 minutes due to darkness, but both teams displayed a high level of soccer throughout the contest.
Texas struck first in the opening minutes as rising junior Allison Smith scored her second goal of the spring. The goal came off a screaming half volley that flew past the Hilltoppers’ goalkeeper.
Minutes later, rising senior Gabby Zarnegar put the Longhorns up by two as she scored a similar goal. Off a rebound from a teammate’s shot, Zarnegar calmly yet powerfully put the ball into the far top corner of the net.
As the game went on, UT experimented with lineups and personnel, but could not score again. The Hilltoppers, however, scored in the waning minutes off a corner kick that the Longhorns could not clear.
In the end, Texas pulled out a victory on a chilly evening overlooking the city of Austin.
UT is back in action next Saturday, March 2, as the Longhorns host North Texas for a 2 p.m. contest at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
