Soccer downs Houston Baptist 1-0 in spring exhibition contest
Feb. 10, 2013
AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Soccer program kicked off its spring exhibition season Saturday night against Houston Baptist at the Town and County Soccer Complex just north of Austin with a 1-0 victory over the Huskies. The Longhorns and Huskies played three 30-minute periods. The lone goal of the night was unassisted and scored by current sophomore forward Allison Smith. Smith, who scored one goal and added three assists in 2012, will be counted upon to play a key role for Texas this fall. The Longhorns and head coach Angela Kelly are looking forward to the 2013 fall season, but the preparation for that campaign begins in earnest this spring. After playing nine freshmen in the fall of 2012 and having 11 newcomers on the team, Texas looks forward to returning a more experienced team this fall. The Longhorns will bring back a pair of All-Big 12 Conference Second Team selections in goalkeeper Abby Smith and midfielder Sharis Lachappelle. Smith and Lachappelle were also joined on the All-Big 12 Newcomer Team by defender Ali Schmalz and midfielder Lindsey Meyer. Texas has four more exhibition games this spring. The Longhorns host St. Edward's Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. CT and North Texas March 2 at 2 p.m. CT before traveling to Texas State March 23 and Rice April 7.
